James Tynion IV Moves Substack Books to Dark Horse for Print – The Hollywood Reporter

Dark Horse is heading for James Tynion IV, the comic book writer who will launch a new line featuring works from Substack and new material from Tiny Onion Studios.

Tynion made headlines a year ago, when the celebrated author moved to Substack from DC. His work on Batman and other titles helped him become a household name. He has since introduced several titles to the Substack digital subscription platform, which will now be printed for the first-time at Dark Horse.

Tynion’s discussions with Dark Horse began early this year, with the scribe wanting a home for what he calls his “true weird” work — those based on unusual events such as encounters with aliens or the supernatural.

“I started picturing an ad for Blue Book The back pages of an issue Hellboy, and something just clicked for me,” Tynion says. “Dark Horse is home to some of the best creator owned comics that have ever been published, and it’s a real honor to join their ranks of creative talent.”

Blue BookThis series is the work of Michael Avon Oeming (artist) and Aditya Birikar (letterer). It focuses on encounters that occur with aliens and supernatural beings. The first series was about Betty and Barney Hill, who claimed in the 1960s that they were adbucted. Their story was the first to be widely published about an alien encounter. Issue No. Issue No. 1 will be published in print February 22, 2023.

Christopher Chaos’ Oddly Pedestrian Life On June 7, 2023, it will hit the stores. The story centers around Christopher Chaos, a lonely teenager and mad scientist. Christopher is drawn into a world full of monsters, heroes and a cult that seeks to destroy them all. Tate Brombal wrote the book., With art by Isaac Goodhart and colors by Kurt Michael Russell. Letters by Aditya Birdikar.

Some work will be published first in print and others on Substack. Tynion recommends that people follow him to get the most current look at his activities.

Blue Book Christopher Chaos These are only the beginning. There’s a whole universe of characters and concepts around the Christopher Chaos title I’m hoping that Tate, Isaac and I get to explore in our time there,” says Tynion. “Beyond that, there are so many stories in the ‘True Weird’ genre that I think are ripe to be told in the comics form. And that’s not counting all of the fun we’ve got in store for readers in the pages of Blue Book itself. We’ll be deciding title by title what makes sense to debut first in print, and what will make a fun addition to the comics I debut in my Substack newsletter.”

Blue Book will have variant covers by Jill Thompson, Dave Johnson, and Michael Avon Oeming. Here is a glimpse at the artwork.
